Gaia wows at Southwell Minster

Gaia, an awe-inspiring touring spectacle, by Luke Jerram awaits you until this Sunday at Southwell Minster.

Measuring an impressive seven meters in diameter, this masterpiece is crafted from intricate NASA imagery, giving you a rare chance to witness our planet suspended from the roof. If you stand to the back of the Minster, Christus Rex appears to be watching over the planet.

Gaia’s installation has a profound purpose – to evoke the Overview Effect, as first described by author Frank White in 1987. Experienced by astronauts, they often encounter a sense of awe for our planet, a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all life, and a renewed commitment to safeguarding the environment.

It is an immersive experience as the Earth gracefully revolves accompanied by a specially composed thirty minute surround sound by the BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Jones.

Speaking to visitors, several agreed that it is an “amazing, moving experience” to see our Earth. Another mused “it’s breath-taking for adults and children alike, my son has been laid under it, literally watching the world go around”.
