What is the Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Board of Education? The Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) is a statutory body, required under the Boards of Education 1991 Measure to oversee the work of the Diocese in supporting statutory education. The DBE meets bi-monthly, overseeing all the work that relates to Primary and Secondary education. Since the restructuring of the Diocese, in which the committees and boards were simplified and delayered, the DBE is one of only 3 statutory committees that remain.
It has a close relationship with the wider work of the Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Education Department which also includes a Children's Officer, a Youth Officer, and Higher Education Chaplains.
The Diocesan Board of Education
The Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Board of Education exists as a statutory body (as laid down by the DBE Measure 1991) to work with the Director of Education in his work with the wider education department. The Board reports to Synod on an annual basis.
There are 2 Bishop’s nominations to the Board, 12 elected members (6 clergy and 6 laity) elected from Synod and by Synod, and another 6 co-opted members. The Board is serviced by the Director of Education (Secretary to the Board), the Assistant to the Director (Administrator to the Board) and the Executive Schools Officer. The RE Advisers are in attendance as required. Other visitors to the Board are the Children’s Officer and the Youth Officer.
The Board has a Standing Committee of lead members who meet between meetings to make urgent decisions and to process business. This is comprised of the Chair and Vice-chair of the DBE and two lead members.
Other possible work is carried out in task groups that the Board establishes for time-limited (often one-off) tasks.
