New Canon Theologian and a Canon Chancellor appointed
The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Williams, is pleased to announce the following appointments:
The Revd Canon Nigel Coates, currently Canon Pastor, to be Canon Chancellor, remaining as a Canon Residentiary and member of the Chapter of Southwell Cathedral. Nigel will continue to make a distinctive contribution to the mission of the Cathedral, having particular oversight of the Leaves of Southwell project and to play a continuing role in education and the Cathedral’s ministry to visitors.
The Revd Professor Alison Milbank, currently Priest Vicar in Southwell Minster and Associate Professor of Theology in the University of Nottingham, to be Canon Theologian. Alison will be welcomed as an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral taking the Kelham stall. She succeeds the Revd Canon Dr Simon Oliver who moved to Durham in 2015.
Bishop Paul said: “The ministries of Alison and Nigel are already deeply appreciated within the Minster and wider diocese. I am delighted that they are both willing to take on new responsibilities in this new season of mission. The life of the Cathedral Church will be further enriched by their ongoing ministry, particularly in the areas of prayer, theological education and spiritual formation.”
Dean Nicola said “I am looking forward to working with Nigel and Alison in in their new roles which will give new and exciting opportunities in the Minster’s outreach and mission. We are reshaping our ministry of pastoral care and although Nigel will continue to bring his considerable gifts to that ministry, it will be shared by a wider team. Alison’s preaching and teaching is already well appreciated in the Cathedral. But her new role will enable the Cathedral to once again be a rich resource for theological engagement at a time when theology really matters in a fast changing Church and world.”
The Service of Installation in the Minster will be on Sunday 15 October 2017 at 3.30pm.
