A retired clergyman who worked in the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham for 26 years in a variety of posts died today (Thursday, 4th October 2007), aged 65. Canon Eric Paul Forshaw – a retired priest living in Leicestershire was chair of the Diocesan Board for Social Responsibility for many years and also worked as a Bishop’s research officer. The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy, paid tribute to Canon Eric Forshaw. He said: “I want to applaud Eric’s work in two particular areas in the life of the diocese. Firstly, he was a champion of Social Responsibility - to the needy, marginalised and excluded, but he was also at the forefront of developing good practice on child protection. The thoughts and prayers of many former colleagues will be with Sue at this sad time.” Eric was Deaconed in 1970 and Priested in 1971 and was Curate at Yardley in Birmingham from 1970-1972. He was an Industrial Chaplain between 1972-1978 and also an Honorary Canon at Edgbaston during this period. From 1978-1990 he was the Bishop’s advisor on Industrial Society in Southwell Diocese and was also given permission to officiate from 1978-1982. He became an Associate Minister in Nottingham between 1982-1994 and was made an Honorary Canon at Southwell Minster from 1986-2004. He was the Bishop’s Research Officer from 1990-1992 and also Programme Director of Nottingham Common Purpose from 1992-1994. He was Team Rector at Clifton from 1994-2004. He leaves a wife, Sue.
