The Venerable Thomas Overington Walker
The Diocese is sad to announce that the Venerable Tom Walker, formerly Archdeacon of Nottingham (1991-96) died peacefully on 26 May 2016, age 82.
Tom was deaconed in 1960, and priested in 1961 in Guildford diocese where he served his curacy at St Paul’s Church, Woking. He moved to this diocese in 1991 to be Archdeacon of Nottingham upon his appointment by the Bishop of Southwell, the Rt Revd Patrick Harris.
Tom brought to this role almost 30 years of church leadership experience from parish, cathedral and para-church contexts. He had previously served as travelling Secretary for the Inter-Varsity Fellowship of Evangelical Unions, as Succentor at Birmingham Cathedral and as a parish priest in the Diocese of Birmingham.
Tom carried out his responsibilities as Archdeacon of Nottingham with great energy and wholehearted commitment. The Rt Revd Paul Williams, Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, said “As a diocese we are deeply thankful for Tom’s wise leadership and passion for the gospel through his five rich years of ministry in this diocese, particularly in the city of Nottingham. Tom’s wife Molly and the whole family are very much in our prayers at this time.”
In retirement Tom served with Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of Hereford. Tom leaves a wife; Molly, and two grown up children; Charis and Tim, and wider family.
A Service of Celebration for the life of Tom takes place at 12.45pm on Thursday 9th June at All Saints, Lindfield, commencing with a time of worship at 12.30pm. There will be a light buffet lunch after the service.
