Community Café Award for St John’s
Churchwarden Susi Artis and her team at St John’s Carrington are rightly proud of their recent award for services to the Community in Sherwood & Carrington.
Originating from a Neighbourhood Watch scheme the cafe grew into a more community focused initiative, and they were nominated by several service users and local tenants and residents associations.
Susi says: “There’s a lot of social isolation with younger as well as older people. We have a total mix of people – mums and children, people in assisted living and ‘space inclusive’ – those with learning difficulties doing daily activities.”
Peter, who struggles with social isolation, helps with setting out the tables and chairs. Matt – who is Susi’s son – is in supported living and on work experience, and Victoria cleans and does the washing up.
The food comes from the Tesco ‘Fairshare’ scheme and Susi cooks at home every Tuesday evening and brings the dishes to the café for Wednesday lunchtime.
There is no charge but donations are given from people who come along to eat and socialise. There’s often a little profit and St John’s received a grant from NG7 of £1500 which replaced the freezer and another was donated, plus a dishwasher.
“There’s a line dancing class on upstairs on a Wednesday morning – they love it and ask us to reserve them a table for lunch!” says Susi.
