Election of new Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham confirmed
The Archbishop of York led a service on Friday evening which included the ‘confirmation of election’ of Bishop-elect the Right Reverend Paul Williams, who is now legally the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham.
The confirmation at York Minster gave Bishop Paul spiritual jurisdiction over the Diocese and ensured all legal processes had been properly and carefully carried out. It was also the moment when he took his oaths of allegiance and canonical obedience.
“It was truly joyful and inspiring to be in York Minster for my Confirmation as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, supported by family, friends and new colleagues in the Diocese,” said Bishop Paul.
“It is a huge privilege to be called to love and serve the Diocese as their new bishop.
“I’m thrilled at the prospect of meeting people across the county and learning how the Church can continue to make a big difference in every community, as we live as people of hope in Jesus Christ.”
The next stage of the process is for Bishop Paul to pay homage to the Queen, acknowledging her as Sovereign and Supreme Governor, during a brief private ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Then, on 27th June, his inauguration as the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham will take place at Southwell Minster.
In the week preceding the service, Bishop Paul, who was previously the Bishop of Kensington, will be visiting all deaneries across Southwell & Nottingham to meet with representatives from parishes and to pray with them. He will also be visiting a place of work, or organisation, connected with people in the deanery.
He said: “The week of prayer visiting all parts of the diocese will be a wonderful way to prepare for the Inauguration and the many adventures ahead.”
Prayers are requested for the visits, for Bishop Paul’s ministry in the diocese and for his family as they prepare to move to Nottinghamshire.
