Getting Started Prayers

The Lord’s Prayer

The prayer which Jesus taught his disciples which continues to be used by his followers across the world.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Jesus Prayer

A short, simple prayer that has been widely used, taught and discussed throughout the history of Eastern Christianity. It is often repeated continually as a part of and extended time of personal prayer seeking the forgiveness of God.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

A prayer at the start of the day

Almighty and everlasting God,

we thank you that you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day.
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger,
order us in all our doings and guide us to do always what is righteous in your sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer before Bible Reading

O Lord, you have given us your word for a light to shine upon our path.
Grant us so to meditate on that word, and to follow its teaching,
that we may find in it the light that shines more and more until the perfect day;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving (adapted from The Book of Common Prayer)

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks
for all your goodness and loving kindness.
We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful,
and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips,
but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service,
and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
