Lydia is new priest at Clifton

On Monday evening the Rev’d Lydia Cartwright was licenced as Team Rector of the Parish of Clifton at Holy Trinity with St Francis Church, by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Williams,

Lydia was born in Bristol and moved to Nottingham aged two.  At 18, she moved to the East Midlands and spent three years at the University of Nottingham reading music.  She married Drew in 1999 and they lived first in Hyson Green and then in Bulwell.  After university, Lydia worked for a variety of high street banks then in the music department at Carlton TV.

Although she was brought up in a Christian home Lydia’s faith really began to come alive to her during her twenties when she began to recognise God’s power and guiding hand at work in her own life.

The couple went to work in a Christian outdoor centre in Scotland to make the gospel relevant to the variety of groups that used the centre and helped the parish church in the nearest town to start a new congregation for families and younger people.

After the birth of daughter Daisy in 2005 they moved back to England and settled in Mansfield, adding children Isaac and Hannah to the family, and began worshipping at St John’s Church, where Lydia co-ordinated the worship team and was involved in ministry with young families.

She trained at St John’s College, and following a placement in Selston and Westwood then took up her curacy in Stapleford where ‘The Church @ Montrose Court’ was born and began to flourish, with lots of people finding faith, hope and love.

Lydia said: “What an incredible night – full of joy and hope and excitement for what lies ahead in Clifton.  It was amazing to be supported by people from all stages of my Christian life – from my parents and godparents who were there right at the start, through to people who I have been journeying with at The Church @ Montrose Court.  I feel blessed and full of nervous anticipation!”

Commenting after the service, Bishop Paul said: “I was struck by the depth of welcome and the generous hospitality of the Clifton congregations here this evening. It was a truly joyous occasion. I know Lydia will continue to bring energy, vision and prayerfulness to the ongoing mission of these parishes in what is  an exciting new season of opportunity.”
