Reader Ministry Development Review (MDR)
The Church of England has encouraged voluntary systems of appraisal for some time and it has now been shown to be an effective reflective tool for development.
In the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham we now ask that Readers undertake an “MDR” every three years to encourage an intentional and regular time to ‘touch base’ with self, ministry role, deanery and diocesan mission and strategy. Most importantly, it’s a time to re-visit one’s vocation, a time to reflect upon and discern what is current and how best to move forward to fulfil God’s call. Readers are responsible to God for the ministry entrusted to them and they are accountable to the Church and to one another for the way in which it is exercised. Ministry is a gift and a trust for which each individual holds account.
As ministers licensed by the Bishop, you engage with a task that is inspired and informed by the scriptural imperative that we are one body joining together in the transforming mission of God. Because in your role you work under the authority of the Bishop and (as with clergy) are accountable for all that you do as a Christian in a public role – whether that be in ones ‘official’ capacity or indeed as an individual, (since once licensed there is a very blurred edge between the private and the public), it is only right that there is a regular opportunity to meet with your parish priest to consider what ministry is like for you and what it means for the community you serve. MDR enables all ministers to better fulfil their leadership role in their context and the wider Church by setting realistic goals for their work and for their ministerial development. The review is about affirmation, celebration and encouragement as well as challenge.
Criticism is rightly levelled at MDR systems when inappropriate or weak objectives / outcomes are set and when developmental support fails to be delivered. The integrity of the process relies on the validity of agreed outcomes and the commitment of both the reviewee and the diocese to bring them to fruition. Therefore, once opportunities have been identified by the Reader and their parish priest, we ask that a copy of the MDR paperwork is sent to the Department of Development so that we can provide advice and access to whatever network of assistance is most appropriate.
