Prayer in Our Diocese

Prayer is central to both collective and individual expressions of Christian faith. Nurturing prayer is one of our diocese’s 7 areas of focus, which means that it is our goal to encourage, equip and inspire prayer in our parishes. Find information on this page to help you join in with our regular rhythms of prayer, nurture prayer in your parish, or continue to grow in your own journey of faith.

How do we pray?

Personal prayer life

We encourage each person attending our churches and exploring faith to pray individually as well as communally, as Jesus modelled in his ministry. Find resources here to support your personal journey.

Prayer in Church

Healthy churches pray. Each church in our diocese will have its own rhythms and practices of prayer, which are supported by liturgical resources from the diocese and national Church of England.

Prayer as a Diocese

Throughout the year, people from across the diocese come together in different ways to pray, including by attending events and following the same pattern of intercessory prayer throughout each month.

Exploring Prayer

It is our hope that every person attending or exploring our churches would come to know the joy of a personal life of prayer. The Church of England has published a helpful resource for those starting their journey, and many churches across the diocese also run the Prayer Course as a way to explore prayer openly in a friendly, group setting.

Start praying wherever you are:

Daily Prayer Diary

Each month, we release a daily prayer diary that combines prayer for our local parishes and ministries with prayer for every diocese in the global Anglican Communion. In a three-year period, we pray for every parish and every global diocese. This pattern mirrors the daily prayers that take place in Southwell Minster.

Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Kingdom Come is an international, multi-denominational prayer movement that takes place over 10 days in May each year, between Ascension and Pentecost. Churches across our diocese engage in different ways, and you can find out more on their website.
