Pancake Celebration Stories
It was great to see pancake celebrations taking place across parishes in the diocese on Shrove Tuesday, bringing together families and the community. Below are some highlights!
St Margaret’s Bilsthorpe
It was a fun-filled and well-attended Pancake Party at St Margaret’s, Bilsthorpe on Tuesday evening. Guests enjoyed an exciting raffle, a quiz, and even the chance to try their hand at making their own pancakes.
There was an abundance of pancakes and toppings to enjoy, including gluten-free options, kindly prepared by the hardworking pancake makers and tea and coffee team – Sandra, John, Jill and Iolen.
A wonderful evening was had by all who attended, and they closed with a prayer of thanksgiving for such a joyful time of fellowship together.

St Giles Balderton
It was a fantastic multi-generational Pancake Party at St Giles Balderton on Shrove Tuesday, with over 100 people in attendance! Guests enjoyed delicious food, crafts and games, with one person declaring these were the best pancakes he had ever tasted!
Louise Marshall, one of the team, shared, “We are so grateful to all the volunteers, without whom this event would not have been possible, and to everyone in our community who came along and enjoyed our Shrove Tuesday hospitality.”

St Mary Magdalene Newark
St Mary Magdalene Newark hosted a fantastic Parish Pancake Party! Over 100 people came together in the newly re-opened St Mary’s, and around 180 pancakes were made and enjoyed. It was a wonderful opportunity for the community to gather, share food and celebrate together.

St Nic’s Nottingham
St Nic’s Nottingham has been busy this week, with over 200 pancakes made across different groups!
At Conversation Club (a group for new arrivals to the UK to learn English for free), participants followed an English recipe to make their own pancakes, practising both language and cooking skills.
The kids’ pancake party was an opportunity for those who attend the midweek toddler and carer group to meet some of the Sunday morning children for games, fun and plenty of pancakes. Meanwhile, St Nic’s Globe Cafe gave international students the chance to try flipping pancakes while learning about British Shrove Tuesday traditions.
It was a week full of food, fun and community for all ages.

Stapleford Parish (St Helen’s, St Luke’s & Montrose Court)
Stapleford Parish celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a full day of fun and learning! In the morning, Montrose Court hosted a science fair with lava lamps, a volcano and posters highlighting Christian scientists.
In the afternoon, children and families came together at Montrose Court for a pancake party filled with games, laughter and plenty of pancakes. The day concluded with a youth pancake party at St Helen’s, where pancakes were enjoyed alongside discussions on growing faith and trust in God during Lent.
