Stories of Nurture Courses Across the Diocese – Part 3

We are continuously encouraged by the many stories that have emerged from over 50 nurture courses focused on ‘Enabling Commitment’ that have taken place across the diocese, and are pleased to share stories from two benefices below.

St Helen’s, Trowell and St Peter’s, Awsworth

The recent Alpha course at St Helen’s, Trowell drew participants from across the Benefice and turned out to be an amazing experience. Sixteen people attended, more than was anticipated, and their commitment was inspiring. Despite facing personal challenges and difficult circumstances, many rearranged their schedules to be there. Among them were two young adults who had begun reading the Bible and came seeking more understanding. Only one participant didn’t complete the course but the impact on those who did was profound. The Holy Spirit Day was especially powerful, with several attendees recommitting their lives to Jesus.

A participant shared:

Two participants have fully immersed themselves in the life of St Peter’s, Awsworth, attending every Sunday since the course ended. One has joined the Messy Church team, and another now serves on the Hospitality team.

Six Alpha “graduates” have joined the midweek Holy Habits Discipleship course alongside participants from a previous Alpha. One was baptised on Easter Sunday, another renewed her baptismal vows at the same service, and two more will take further steps of faith on 7th June at Southwell Minster – one through confirmation and another being formally received into the Church of England.

In response to a request from an older lady who couldn’t attend evening sessions, a new lunchtime Alpha began in April at Cossall. The first session welcomed 10 participants aged between 21 and 89, including one who came after simply spotting the Alpha banner outside!

St Helen’s, Trowell are also seeing the phenomenon of young adults turning up at midweek gatherings, saying they’ve started reading the Bible and asking how they can be supported on their journey!

St Mary the Virgin & All Souls, Bulwell

Over the past year, St Mary the Virgin & All Souls has joyfully celebrated more than 25 baptisms. One especially moving story is that of an entire family who came to faith together. They began by watching services online, then gradually made the step to come along in person. From there, there they were all baptised, took part in a nurture course, and have since been confirmed.

We’re so encouraged to hear these stories and invite you to pray with us for all those who have encountered Jesus for the first time over recent months. Nurture Courses are a wonderful way to ask life’s big questions and explore Christianity in a welcoming and relaxed environment. Whether you are searching for faith or looking for community, you are warmly invited to join any of the courses running across the diocese. You can also read more stories here.
