Colin Slater portrait at Notts County

In Memory of Colin Slater MBE

We are saddened to hear that Colin Slater MBE died yesterday, on the 10th January 2022, at the age of 87.

While many tributes have been offered to Colin as ‘the Voice of Notts County’, he was also a man of deep faith. Colin made a remarkable and inspirational contribution to diocesan and synodical life and witness in Southwell and Nottingham.

Colin’s dedication to Christ ranged from serving as Church Warden for his beloved Christ Church, Chilwell to a pivotal role volunteering as Development Officer for St John’s Theological Training College, Bramcote in the 1990s, where he would go on to serve as a highly regarded trustee for many years. He was first elected to diocesan synod in the 1970s and then in 1990, he was elected as a diocesan lay representative on General Synod which he served for 31 years.

Reflecting on Colin’s life, Bishop Paul said, “I know I speak for many when I express my immense gratitude for Colin’s unfailingly kind, encouraging and generous friendship, as well as for his faithful and prayerful service to so many across this diocese and beyond.

Colin touched countless lives and will be greatly missed by so many, but today we give thanks to the Lord he loved for the life and sport he loved, and the many ways he helped others to find hope in Christ. We are comforted to know that he is now at home with Jesus, his Friend and Saviour.”

Colin was born in Shipley, West Yorkshire, where he began his career as a journalist in Bradford’s newspapers. He progressed to reporting football matches in 1959 and then he joined BBC Radio Nottingham in 1968, which led him to commentating on almost 3000 Notts County matches.

Colin will be hugely missed by all in the diocese, Synod, and his listeners alike.

Details of the arrangements for Colin’s funeral will be announced in due course.
