Pancake Celebration Stories
It was great to see pancake celebrations taking place across parishes in the diocese on Shrove Tuesday, bringing together families and the community. Below are some highlights.
St Helen’s Stapleford
To celebrate Shrove Tuesday, St Helen’s hosted a pancake party for their youth, blending fun with reflection. They played games, ate lots of pancakes and explored the meaning of Shrove. Activities included a race while carrying a glass of water, then set the glass down before racing back, showing how much easier it is to run the race of life once we’ve set down our burdens.
They also discussed 1 Peter 5:6-7, emphasising how being honest with God helps alleviate anxiety. Nakita, Youth Minister at St Helen’s shared, “I demonstrated “casting” burdens by throwing with exaggerated effort, leading to some humorous moments. The final activity was a twist on Pictionary. Each team had a glass of coloured water, and with every correct answer we added clean water to the glass. The first team to have a clear glass won. This activity tied into our reflection on Isaiah 40:31, highlighting how trusting in God leads to renewal and strength.”
The evening ended with lots of pancakes expertly made by the team in Stapleford – it was a great evening!

Woven St Leo’s
It was a great time at Woven St Leo’s Family Church Pancake Party. The day included discussions about lent, pin the pancake and a handstand competition!

St Saviour’s Nottingham
A series of Pancake Day celebrations took place with youth and families at St Saviour’s Church. The events began with the newly launched youth night, Spotfires, where 11 young people gathered to make pancakes and spend time together. On Monday, families attended an after-school drop-in for more pancakes, a short reflection on Lent, and quality time together. This Lent, the focus at St Saviour’s has been on growing closer to God and trusting in His provision, encouraging children and their families to participate in daily activities such as prayer, scripture reading, acts of kindness, or even fasting from TV!

St Wilfrid’s Calverton
It was 90 minutes of fun and laughter at Calverton Parish on Tuesday with 140 pancakes eaten, and 60 people of all ages participating. The gathering included both new and familiar faces, enjoying food and games together!

St Nic’s Nottingham
St Nic’s Nottingham had two pancake parties this week! On Monday evening at their Globe Cafe for international students, they had American and British-style pancakes as well as pancake races. Then on Tuesday at their Conversation Club, the students learned about the history of pancake day and how to cook British-style pancakes.

Holy Trinity Lenton
At Holy Trinity in Lenton, over 60 people joined in their Pancake Party, with both students and families enjoying lots of pancakes. There were also games and crafts including decorate your own paper pancake, parachute games and a scavenger hunt for pancake ingredients!
