Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day

Thursday 8 May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, commemorating the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Churches across England will participate in a series of commemorations to mark this historic occasion. A key part of the day will be the ringing of church bells at 6:30 p.m, echoing the joyful sounds that swept the country in 1945. Churches and cathedrals, including those in Southwell and Nottingham, will ring their bells as a collective act of thanksgiving.

We’re aware of a number of Bells that will be ringing, such as St Michael’s Church in Bramcote (where this may be filmed by ITV Central) and also bell ringing at Southwell Minster from 6:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Southwell Minster will hold a special Evensong at 3:30 p.m., with Bishop Paul preaching.

A national two-minute silence will take place at 12 noon on Thursday 8 May, providing a shared moment of reflection across the country.

Worship resources are available to support clergy and lay leaders in planning acts of remembrance, reflection, and prayer. The Church of England is providing free online materials and encouraging all parishes to take part in these commemorations.
