Encouraging Pentecost Stories Across the Diocese
It was wonderful to see churches across our diocese, mark Pentecost with creativity, thanksgiving, and reflection. Below are some encouraging stories!
At St Mary’s Bulwell, on Sunday 17th May ahead of Pentecost, there was a joyful and significant occasion as the church celebrated four baptisms. Among those baptised was Brandon Holton, who is preparing for his Confirmation at Southwell Minster on Saturday 23rd June.
Brandon’s baptism was by full immersion, marking a first for St Mary’s Church as well as for Brandon himself, and adding a powerful and memorable moment to the service!

Over two days last week, The Cranmer Group enjoyed a joyful opportunity to share God’s love and the story of Pentecost with children from Archbishop Cranmer Academy.
Pupils engaged with a range of interactive prayer spaces centred on the Lord’s Prayer, exploring its meaning through creative and reflective activities.
Clare Chambers, Children & Families Lead, shared: “We heard wonderful words of worship and heartfelt prayers. We are so grateful for the opportunities we have to share the Gospel and to pray for these children and their families.”

The churches of Sherwood Forest (Edwinstowe, Clipstone and Perlethorpe
The churches across Sherwood Forest serving Edwinstowe, Clipstone and Perlethorpe marked the season of Pentecost with a week of prayer, creativity and community outreach as part of the global Thy Kingdom Come initiative.
At the heart of the activities was St Thomas’ Church which welcomed children and staff from Archbishop Cranmer Primary Academy alongside families from the Tot Spot toddler group for a series of multi sensory Pentecost workshops designed to explore themes of faith, fire and the Holy Spirit in an engaging hands on way.

Across the three parishes residents joined a range of prayer activities including prayer walks through Sherwood Forestand surrounding communities where participants prayed for homes, schools, shops and local businesses. Special Prayer Praise and Pastries breakfasts were also held in Edwinstowe and Clipstone bringing people together to reflect on mission, outreach and community life. A reflective Prayer in the Forest walk also led worshippers from St Mary’s into Sherwood Forest for an outdoor time of evening prayer immersed in nature.

Celebrations continued on Pentecost Sunday with services in Edwinstowe and Clipstone featuring joyful worship including singing Happy Birthday to mark the Church’s traditional birthday and colourful streamers symbolising the Holy Spirit. The week concluded with a relaxed Pentecost Picnic held in the vicarage garden bringing families together in fellowship and celebration.
At St James Church in Normanton-on-Soar, Pentecost Sunday was marked with a joyful service of Holy Communion that included a special moment of celebration and baptism.
During the service, the congregation gathered to witness the baptism of Dean Sampson, who has been attending St James Church Normanton-on-Soar for over a year. Dean’s journey with the church began through regular quiet visits during the week, as the church remains open daily. Over time, he began attending services and becoming part of the worshipping community.

As part of the Pentecost celebration, The Revd Simon Richardson spoke with Dean during the service, inviting him to share his personal story of faith. Dean reflected on his life experiences and spoke about how he came to recognise Jesus as his Lord.
At St Christopher’s Church on Pentecost Sunday was a truly joyful and memorable occasion. It was special celebration for the congregation to witness a family baptised and be welcomed into the family of faith!

We’re so grateful for the gift of the Holy Spirit and for the many inspiring stories and powerful testimonies of Pentecost being shared across our diocese.
