Good News Spotlight: Celebrating 150 Years of Caunton’s Church School Legacy
Last Thursday, more than 150 years of faithful service, learning and community were celebrated at a special thanksgiving service marking the remarkable legacy of Dean Hole CofE Primary School.
As the school prepares to close on 31 August, pupils, staff, former headteachers, teachers, governors and members of the local community gathered together to give thanks for the generations of children whose lives have been shaped by the school’s Christian foundation. Around 50 people attended the service, celebrating the lasting impact of a church school that has served Caunton for over a century and a half.
The service was led by Archdeacon Phil Williams, who reflected on the sadness that comes with endings while encouraging everyone to remember the countless moments of joy, friendship and faith that have been shared within the school community over the years.
John Dodd, who served as headteacher for 20 years, shared treasured memories from his time at the school, recalling the many pupils, families and staff who have contributed to its rich history.
One of the most moving moments of the service came when the children presented the church with a beautifully decorated wooden cross, creating a lasting symbol of the close relationship between the school and the parish. Each child was also presented with a Bible as a gift, while both current and former members of staff received a commemorative candle holder engraved with an image of Southwell Minster and the words:
“In recognition of your dedication and service carrying the light of Christ into our church schools.”
Following the service, refreshments were served thanks to the generosity of the churchwardens, while guests enjoyed a display of historic photographs and newspaper cuttings that celebrated the school’s story through the decades.
Although this chapter is coming to a close, the legacy of Christian education in Caunton will continue to be remembered and celebrated. The school site will begin a new chapter as a hub of Newark Orchard School, supporting children and young people with special educational needs.
