Installation of New Dean at Southwell Minster
Southwell Minster marked a significant moment in its history yesterday as The Revd Canon Dr Stephen Evans was formally installed as the new Dean of Southwell.
The special service, held in the cathedral and led by the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Right Reverend Paul Williams, welcomed more than 500 guests. Beautiful music was performed by the Cathedral Choir and the Minster Chorale. The ceremony included the swearing-in and installation of Dr Evans in the Dean’s historic stall in the Quire, as well as in the Minster’s renowned Chapter House.

In his inaugural sermon, Stephen spoke on the theme “God is love,” encouraging unity and hope. He reflected on the challenges of anxious times, reminding the congregation that “there is no room for fear in love” and urging all to build together with confidence in God’s love.

Speaking about his new role, Stephen said:
“It is a great joy to have been chosen to be the next Dean of Southwell. Diana and I are very happy to have come back to the East Midlands after almost sixteen years in central London. I am indebted to The Revd Canon Dr Neil Evans, who has brought so much to the Cathedral and Chapter through his time as Interim Dean. I look forward to beginning my work alongside my Minster colleagues and the congregation in proclaiming the hope-filled message of God’s healing and reconciling love throughout Nottinghamshire and parts of South Yorkshire.”
Bishop Paul welcomed the appointment, saying:
“I know that Stephen will bring considerable experience, wisdom and vision for the further development of the Minster. We are thrilled he will be taking on this senior role at a time of exciting growth and development, as we seek to make a bigger difference in every community.”

Originally from Wales, Stephen brings a wide range of experience. Before ordination, he served as a Navigator and Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy. He studied Theology at the University of Oxford and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Aberdeen. Ordained in 1986, he has also worked with the Mission to Seamen.
Stephen is married to Diana Evans MBE, Head of Places of Worship at Historic England. Together they have one adult daughter, Lydia.
Dr Evans succeeds The Revd Canon Dr Neil Evans (no relation), who has served as Interim Dean since November 2024.
