Appointment of New Canon Missioner, Residentiary Canon at Southwell Minster

We are happy to announce the appointment of Canon Paul Rattigan as New Canon Missioner, Residentiary Canon at Southwell Minster. Currently, he is Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Canon Residentiary and Chancellor at Leicester Cathedral. Paul will move to Southwell in the early New Year.

Paul brings considerable experience in cathedral and parish ministry, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming him to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham.

Details about the date for Paul’s licensing and installation will published when finalised.

Paul shared, “I am excited about my calling to Southwell Minster as Canon Missioner. I grew up in the Midlands and then went to university where I studied various subjects before moving to Liverpool to teach maths and psychology. It was here that my call to ordained ministry crystallised and I was ordained in 1995 at Liverpool Cathedral.

Since then I have served in various parishes from inner city to suburbia in both Birmingham and Liverpool. Eight years ago I was surprised to find myself at Liverpool Cathedral as Canon for Discipleship as cathedrals are not my background at all. Since then, cathedrals have gotten under my skin and a key part of who I am and how I see God growing the kingdom.

Three years ago saw me move to Leicester as Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Canon Chancellor at Leicester Cathedral, thus keeping my passion for cathedrals alive. Sadly the growth on the ordinand side meant a reduction in my cathedral involvement and me re-examining my calling. I was delighted when the post came up at Southwell Minster as it will give me a chance to reengage more fully with cathedral ministry.

I will be sad to leave Leicester and the friends I have made but my overarching impression of Southwell and the people I met during the interview process was a great welcome and a great place for this next chapter. I am looking forward to writing it together. I am married to Anne and have one daughter who lives with her family in Nottingham.

See you soon!”
