Over 90% of churches with completed energy footprint tools in 2024

As we continue the journey of caring for creation in our diocese, we’re pleased to announce that 91% of churches have completed their energy footprint tool. This is significantly up from the 79% in 2023, and reaches the target set out in the Diocesan Net Zero Carbon Action Plan.

The Church of England’s Energy Footprint Tool is way for churches to enter fuel and power use for the previous year. The data collected from the tool helps churches to understand their carbon footprint, and in some cases means they may be eligible for grants to help kickstart net zero projects. This work is an essential part of caring for God’s Creation, by helping to combat global heating and climate change.

Although an ambitious target, the 90% goal set out in the Net Zero Carbon Action Plan has been reached with 271 churches utilising this helpful tool. There were even 3 deaneries in our diocese that reached 100% completion rates. The scope of this Action Plan (approved in October 2023) covers churches, schools, the minster, clergy housing and Jubilee House, the diocesan office. The Plan is not just about technical Net Zero Carbon and financial matters but is ultimately rooted in living as generous disciples, who steward well the gift of creation and the resources we have all been given.

In response to the news our Diocesan Environment Officer, Robert Cleave shared ‘ A big thank you to all who have made this happen, especially Parish Treasurers and Deanery Administrators.  This may seem technical but it is an important step on our NZC journey and Caring For Creation and is an enabler for reducing our carbon footprint”

This step forward comes at an opportune time for our diocese as we look for a Net Zero Carbon Project Officer to join the team. This role will build on the great progress we’ve made so far and put in further strategy and plans for being Zero Carbon by 2030. Applications close this Sunday 18th so we encourage you to pass this on to anyone who you feel might be relevant for this exciting opportunity.
